riage while winking at men, and the
story doesn't deeply amplify the songs.
It's true that Porter wasn't deep, but he
took sentiment to posh precincts of
sophistication and wry tenderness,
while his entertainment skills kept him
from getting stuck in elitism.
SUpple enough to keep us involved,
falling back on a tune whenever the
story begins to stiffen, given heart and
some depth by Kline (and charm by
Judd), De-Lovely is a swan song. It
echoes the high, zinging realm of tonic
wits like Clifton Webb, Noel Coward,
Selma Diamond, Oscar Levant,
George Sanders, Alexander King and
Kay Thompson, whose brittle banter
and cashmere cynicism found their
anthems in Cole Porter.
