with Jewish relatives in South Africa,
where the six-member Isaak band has
toured. The guitarist-bassist-drummer,
who makes a return visit to Meadow
Brook, also has played at the Fox
Theatre, which he finds the most beau-
tiful venue he has ever seen.
When he is not on the road, Yatovitz
spends his time with former Irish step
dancer and partner Pamela Carden.
"Just as my tastes have been eclectic
in the sounds of music I've played, my
writing has many different facets," says
Yatovitz, currently working on vocal,
bluesy, rock material. "I have a whole
catalog of jazz songs I've written and
more folk-oriented songs.
"I've done a little bit of klezmer,
which is an idiom that's very technically
demanding. I have a dream of getting
into klezmer for a while because I love
that it's so soulful. It has the elements
of jazz that appeal to me and that east-
ern European sound that I love."
Community service is
another important commit-
ment. Yatovitz just returned
from a USO trip to Walter
Reed Army Medical Center
in Washington, D.C., where
the band visited and per-
formed for seriously injured
soldiers just back from Iraq.
He also plays music with
middle-school children.
"I truly feel blessed,"
Yatovitz says. "I know people
in their 60s still searching for
Hershel Yatovitz, right, jams with Chris Isaak, left.
something personally mean-
ingful. I haven't had to go
through that search because I
knew that music felt like what I was

technical side of my music," he
explains. With acting, I'm dealing
with human experience and trying to

"Most of my education happens
through playing with musicians,"
Yatovitz says. "While I was still in my
teens and 20s, I played with lots of
older musicians. There was no style I
wouldn't try or experience.
"I met a fantastic guitar player who
was almost 20 years older than I, and
he needed a bass player. The only way I
could hang out with him on a regular
basis was to work with the bass, so I
did that. There's such a high demand
for bass players that my phone did not
stop ringing after the word got out.
"I then got interested in drums,
another rhythm section instrument. I've
played drums in a few bands, although
guitar stayed my main love."
As Yatovitz took on a new role for
The Chris Isaak Show, he felt acting
added to his musicianship. The
Showtime series followed the musicians
through episodes depicting life behind
the scenes.
