E

e was weary after just a few
hours of sleep the night before,
but Rabbi Avraham Jacobovitz
was animated at the 24th annual ban-
quet of his Machon
L'Torah, the Jewish
Learning Network
of Michigan.
Rabbi J kvelled
in announcing that
the JAAM-
Maimonides
Leadership Training
Program will spread
from eight campus-
Rabbi Jacobovitz es this school year
to 29 in 2004-
2005. Oak Park-based Machon spon-
sors JAAM: Jewish Awareness AMerica.
The 2-year-old program gives Jewish
college students an informal opportuni-
ty to embrace Judaism at their comfort
level. Maimonides fellowships honor
leadership ability, Jewish involvement
and care for others.
Banquet master of ceremonies
Robert Weiss characterized Rabbi J as "a
person totally dedicated to his people
and to exposing all Jews, no matter
what their backgrounds, to Jewish learn-
ing and values."
The Jewish Resource Center in Ann
Arbor, under Rabbi Aaron Eisemann,
offered the first Maimonides fellowships
to University of Michigan students.
Michigan State University students will
vie for fellowships this fall under Rabbi
Einar Meisels in conjunction with
Hillel.
"There are over 400,000 Jewish stu-
dents on college campuses in North
America and I say to myself, 'Who val-
ues their tremendous potential?"' said
Rabbi Jacobovitz at Machon's June 30
banquet in Southfield. "How sad it is
that this potential many times gets so
lost and distorted with the lack of direc-
tion."
He added, "I say to myself isn't that
sad that many of them perhaps will
never realize that they come from such a
precious legacy of the wonderful Jewish
people who taught the world so much
good, so many morals, so many won-
),
derful values.
