Will be back in Detroit

CHANGING DIRECTIONS from page 33
tones and bolder dramatic colors.
I feature a lot of carved and textured
surface designs to create forms that
are interesting to touch and visually
appealing.
"Jewish traditions are very impor-
tant in my life. Although I do not
spend a lot of time attending formal
religious services, I have been active
in a variety of Jewish groups and
engage in spiritual practices. My
Judaica reflects my spirit and identi-
ty, and I like to make items that
celebrate ceremonies and rituals."
Mickelson finds that ceramics
projects, even those done on com-
mission, continue to feel more like
fun than work, and she enjoys being
in control of her schedule as she
completes projects at home, where
her significant other, Mark Wilson,
has his base as a computer consult-
ant.
The couple have two cats, and
she volunteers at the Zimmer
Foundation, a sanctuary for aging
homeless cats. Kittens and cats often
appear in her ceramics projects.
"Working with clay is a ground-
ing, meditative outlet for my
creative energies while connecting
me with people in a personal way,"
Mickelson says. "I get such a thrill
knowing that people are using and
enjoying my artwork. Customers
have told me how they use my
bowls, mugs and other designs,
and that delights me.
"Doing art shows brings me in
contact with people I might not
otherwise have met. At my last
show, a guy bought one of my big
bowls, and after chatting with him
for a while, I realized that his grand-
father had done surgery on my knee
more than 30 years ago.
"The people I meet at shows —
the artists and folks that stop by
my booth — are important to what
I love about being an artist." El
Art in the Park runs July 9-11
along the streets surrounding
Kellogg Park in downtown
Plymouth. Festival hours are
noon-8 p.m. Friday, 1 0 a.m.-7
p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5
p.m. Sunday. Dorie Mickelson
will show her ceramics in booth
#360, located on Ann Arbor Trail
between Forest Avenue and
Harvey. (734) 454-1314 or
