• One For All: One of the best invest-
ments you can make for the summer
and year round is a membership to your
favorite science center.
Purchase a membership to a local
institution like Bloomfield Hills
Cranbrook, for example, and you can
also visit, at no extra cost, the Detroit
Science Center, COSI in Ohio and the
science centers in Flint and Ann Arbor.
There's a lot to see and do for children
age 3-18 at all of these.
• The Big Screen: Taking the whole
family to a film can be costly; buying
snacks there may mean getting a second
mortgage on your home.
Instead, rent a movie from your
favorite video store. Want to know why
a movie is rated PG? Check it out at
vvww.lcids in mind.com This is an
excellent, free site (many places charge)
that rates films according to violence,
sexual content and profanity. You can
read in advance, in detail, exactly what
you'll see in each film.
To make the day really fun, serve
popcorn in old-fashioned movie con-
tainers (available at Target) and ask
older children to make tickets.
• You Read It Here First: Book stores,
libraries — are there any nicer places in
the world? Library books are free to
borrow, of course, and local libraries
often host free programs, as well, with
story time and arts and crafts for tots.
Call ahead and ask the dates of library
book sales (one of the best is in Troy,
held every Friday morning).
The Southfield library not only has a
lot to do (like the Space Room), it has a
nice snack shop where children can buy
pretzels, chips and pop. Book stores,
like Barnes & Noble and Borders, are
very generous when it comes to letting
patrons browse to their hearts' content,
and they both offer terrific programs for
children. You can stay with littler ones
during the program and give older chil-
dren $10 to go off and find the book of
their dreams. ❑
