RINKE CADILLAC
87 Years And Still Delivering
Clergy Protest War
We commend the U.S. adthinistra-
don for its long overdue decision to
negotiate with the United Nations
the terms by which sovereignty of
Iraq has been returned to the interim
government of its people.
We dare to hope that the terms of
the Security Council's June 9 resolu-
tion will be promptly translated from
paper to practice, and faithfully
adhered to by all parties concerned.
Nothing less will be morally accept-
able.
Whatever differing views we as
individuals may have held at the start
of the present war in Iraq, we are
now united in our belief that the pre-
emptive invasion undertaken almost
solely by the United States has result-
ed in a catastrophic breakdown of law
and order. This moral failure has been
tragically demonstrated in the
botched occupation of Iraq and the
human degradation at the Abu
Ghraib prison.
We remain outraged by the contin-
uing reports of the widespread abuse
and torture of Iraqi detainees by
members of the U.S. armed services,
its intelligence operatives and private
contractors in the employ of the
American gdyernment. We mourn
the loss of cduntless lives among the
civilian population of Iraq and the
killing and wounding of military per-
sonnel in this unwanted and unneces-
sary war.
We call upon our national leaders
in the executive and legislative
branches 1) to mandate compensa-
tion for the families of innocent Iraqi
civilian noncombatants killed, injured
or deprived of property due to the
invasion and occupaion; 2) to pro-
vide full, appropriate and timely
medical treatment to\ all U.S. veterans
of any and all health roblems —
both physical and ps chological —
suffered as a result o their service in
Iraq or Afghanistan; 3) to assure that
U.S. tax dollars are contributed pro-
peacekeep-
portionately to the
ing mission.
We - are moved to/issue this state-
ment on the basis Of the shared ethi-
cal principles of the religions we
espouse.
