T

he "dog days" of summer may be getting a little too long for
parents of young children who refuse to go to bed before the
sun sets, yet are ready for the day at first light. What's a har-
ried morn to do?
Luckily, the choices are endless.
Our "Out on the Town" calendar provides valuable information about
family events of which you may not be aware. For all-day outings, grab the
kids and head to Pontiac for Chrysler Arts Beats & Eats over Labor Day
weekend or downtown to the Comerica TasteFest on July 4. The Detroit
Zoo welcomes the little ones with children's concerts on July 7 and Aug. 25.
Everyone's favorite Dora the Explorer (above) takes the Fox Theatre stage
on July 31 and Aug. 1. Or check out Rochester Hills' Village Art Fair at The
Village shopping center Aug. 28-29 — the Imagination Station will be set up
with free arts and crafts for kids.
Of course there's also an immeasurable mental health benefit to hanging
out with the little ones during the day — at the park, on a bike ride, at a
backyard picnic — then tucking them in with a good video and a dedicated
babysitter and indulging in some alone time. Take in a concert at Meadow
Brook or stroll the streets of Birmingham during Jazzfest July 15-17. Fash
Bash is Aug. 15 this year and Neiman Marcus will be featuring the hot, new
collection from Roberto Cavalli at the fashion extravaganza of the summer
in a new venue — the GM Renaissance Center.
If you're looking for a signature piece to turn heads at Fash Bash, head
over to Neiman's and ask to see Israeli designer Michal Negrin's jewelry
collection. Negrin was in town recently for a trunk show benefiting Kadima.
The response to her jewels was overwhelming and even created a buzz as
far away as Chicago. Platinum photographed some of her "fantasy" designs
for this issue.
This month we also debut a new feature "Platinum Personality." We pro-
file Jodi Caden, a kitchen and cabinetry designer and now entrepreneur.
Caden has started her own company, Caden Design Group. Please look for
interesting "Platinum Personalities" in upcoming issues.
Enjoy the rest of the warm summer weather. I'll be looking for you out-
side in the sunshine, perusing one of the art fairs with smiling kids in tow.
