Arts Life AFFORDABLE ART from page 29 and instructional centers with student showrooms. "Clients looking for art that costs less than $500 can find that through young, talented artists or even estab- lished artists selling smaller works," explains Christine Schefman,. director of District Arts. "We carry prints by Jay Lefkowitz that sell for $200." The Danielle Peleg Gallery in West Bloomfield also represents a wide span of artists whose works sell at a wide span of prices. Peleg advises collectors on budgets to look for the works of artists just starting.out. "We have lots of pieces — paintings, sculpture, ceramics — by Israeli artists," Peleg says. "One of our newer artists is Leo Ray, who does abstract paintings in oil on canvas. He is won- derful in his color quality." Judith Primak, owner of the Detroit Gallery of Contemporary Crafts in the Fisher Building, offers all kinds of works except for paintings. Her range of prices is geared to patrons looking for items — porcelain, blown glass, furniture — costing less than $500. "People looking for art should look around as much as they can by going to galleries and art fairs," says Primak, who features pieces by artists working locally or outside the area. "Only the experience of seeing many things helps buyers sort out what they like and makes them ready to trust their own ” taste. Anne Kuffler, owner of Ariana Gallery in Royal Oak, also offers a vari- ety of media, including paintings, at affordable prices but considers clay as the best investment. There are many pieces that can be functional as well as decorative. "We've been carrying the work of Maishe Dickman, who has been fea- tured in Ceramics Monthly," Kuffler says. "He is a Jewish artist who has done wonderful platters and teapots." All kinds of art are available at three centers where the bulk of profits for specific pieces go to member artists who made them and help with opera- tions — the Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale, Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor and the Detroit Artists Market. When commercial commis- sions are not required, the price of each work is lower than it otherwise might be. Marilyn Blinder, who showcases mixed-media paintings, is one of the Jewish artists whose work is shown at the Lawrence Street Gallery, which used to be located in Pontiac. "Each of the 32 members gets 9 feet of display space each month, and I have two collages that I'm currently showing," says Blinder, who will have a large exhibit in September. "We also have to work in the gallery two after- noons a week." The Lawrence Street Gallery joins a number of galleries recently moved to Ferndale. The Batista Gallery, for example, is a neighbor offering artwork AFFORDABLE ART on page 33 Galleries At A Glance Art enthusiasts keeping to personal budgets can find all kinds of work in galleries that have a range of media and prices — a couple even as low as $3 for original greeting cards.
