Eyes On The Skies
Jerusalem/JTA — A new terminal at
Israel's main airport will have sur-
veillance cameras capable of spotting
terrorist or criminal suspects.
Ben-Gurion Airport's second ter-
minal, scheduled to open next year,
already has been fitted with the
security system designed by the
Israeli firm Rafael, Israel's Channel
Two television reported.
In a demonstration, airport offi-
cials showed how the cameras,
linked to a police database, can scan
crowds and spot individuals marked
as security risks within seconds. The
surveillance system scans various fea-
tures of suspects' faces, overcoming
disguises such as fake beards or wigs.
Fence Is Criticized
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's high court
ordered the West Bank security bar-
rier rerouted to reduce Palthinian
hardship.
"The current routing has created
such hardship for the local popula-
tion that the state must find an
alternative," the High Court of
Justice said, ruling in favor of peti-
tioners who challenged the govern-
ment's expropriation of Palestinian
land for a 20-mile section of the
project northwest of Jerusalem.
The three-judge panel recognized
that Israel needs the fence to stop
suicide bombers, but said it must
take humanitarian concerns into
account. An alternative must be
found "to harm the local population
less," the decision said, referring to
the specific section of the fence
between Modi'in and Jerusalem.

The Israel Defense Ministry said it
would review the route of the fence,
which upon completion is to.stretch
for more than 370 miles. The
International Court of Justice at the
Hague is slated to rule on the fence's
legality July 9, though Israel rejects
the international court's jurisdiction.
Country Club Penalized
Toronto/JTA — A judge awarded
$370,000 to a former manager of a
Toronto golf club who was fired
after he tried to change the club's
no-Jews policy.
An Ontario judge found that
Michael Geluch, the former general
manager of Toronto's Rosedale Golf
Club, was wrongfully dismissed in
1997 for trying to change a mem-
bership policy that barred Jews as
members.
Geluch had charged that club
board members had tried to prevent
Toronto businessman George Cohon
from joining the club on the
grounds that his admittance would
be tantamount to "opening the
floodgates to more Jewish mem-
bers."
Located in the posh neighbor-
hood of Rosedale, the exclusive 111-
year-old club has since admitted
Cohan, who is chairman of
McDonald's Canada.
Barak Contradicts Clinton
Jerusalem/JTA — Ehud Barak denied
a claim in President Clinton's auto-
biography that Syria was ready to
make peace with Israel.
In My Life, Clinton writes that the
former Israeli prime minister could
have made peace with Syria in early
2000, but balked at the deal.
Speaking at a conference in
Netanya, however, Barak said Syria
did not agree to new borders, but
continued to demand the eastern
shore of the Sea of Galilee, Israel's
main reservoir and an asset Barak
had made clear he could not surren-
der.
Winnipeg Elects Mayor
Sam Katz, an Israeli-
Toronto/JTA
born baseball-team owner, was elect-
ed mayor of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Katz, 52, whose parents were
Holocaust survivors, came to
Canada as an infant. Considered:a
political outsider, the conservative-
leaning businessman gained local
fame 10 years ago when he negotiat-
ed construction of a downtown sta-
dium and founded the Winnipeg
Goldeyes baseball club.
Katz won a sweeping victory in
municipal elections June 22.

N.Y. OKs Kosher Law
New York's state
New York/JTA
senate passed a pending new kosher
law.
The law was made necessary
when the state's previous kosher law
was declared unconstitutional after a
lawsuit arguing that the state agency
involved in kashrut — administered
by Chasidic and other Orthodox
Jews — had crossed the line from
consumer oversight into unconstitu-
tional religious entanglement.
The bill still needs Gov. George
Pataki's signature before it becomes
law.
