First American Maccabi delegation to Great
Britain has local roots.

EE

aley Stern, 13, of West
Bloomfield, would normally
spend her summer in day

camp.
But for two weeks she will join seven
other teen athletes as part of the Detroit
Maccabi Club's first appearance at the
Great Britain Youth Games, from July
29 to Aug. 8.
This is not like the annual JCC
Maccabi Games, said Emily Friedman,
delegation head. The sports are aimed at
a more fun level and the teen partici-
pants will sample a wide range of sports
instead of playing just one.
Sports will include soccer, basketball,
tennis, table tennis and clinics for other
sports.
Two of the Detroit participants, Stern
and Samantha Iovan, 15, of West
Bloomfield, will also compete in the
JCC Maccabi Games in Boston in
August.
The Detroit Maccabi Club has been

sending teens to the JCC Maccabi
Games in the U.S. and Canada since
1982. They have been trying to form a
delegation for the British youth games
for two years, said Friedman, of Oak
Park. "Detroit's always been one of the
initiators" in Maccabi, she said.
The teens will be hosted by English
families for two days before the games,
then room with other participants dur-
ing the games in the University of
Nottingham dormitories. The Detroit
participants will pay $1,000 for the
experience.
More than 300 Jewish teens from
Israel, Great Britain, the United States
and Europe are expected at the event.
"Everyone is very excited about the
international' flavor forYG04," said Dan
Levy, major events and communications
manager for Maccabi Great Britain. "It
is the first time that the USA will be
represented at our Youth Games. We
have groups coming from Maccabi Tsair
and from Maccabi Israel Netball, both
for the third time." ❑
