Foundation Awards Grants
At its May meeting of the combined
boards, the Jewish Federation and
United Jewish Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit approved con-
tinuing grants to two community
programs, totaling $24,250 from the
Max M. Fisher Jewish Community
Foundation.
Michael Eizelman, chair of the
Planning and Allocations Steering
Committee, reported that there were
no start-up grants to projects for the
current cycle, due to the decrease in
funding to the Fisher Foundation as
a result of Federation's reduction in
overall spending.
Reviewing proposals from organi-
zations with continuing grant
requests for the June 2004 cycle, the
Fisher Foundation recommended
two proposals as follows:
• A second-year grant of $20,000
to Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education to support its Cyber
Tutor Program. The goal of the pro-
gram is to better employ computer
technology as an effective teaching
tool in congregational schools and
to involve teens in their congrega-
tions by training them to assist in
classrooms as special tutors. This
year's grant will be used to train 20
new cyber tutors at the new David
B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center,
the state-of-the-art computer lab,
located at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
• A third-year grant of $4,250 to
the Jewish Historical Society to sup-
port the project of adapting the
popular tours of historic Jewish
Detroit to Jewish school groups and
young adults.
