Yours in dance, Miss Kim Fink A Picture of Grandmother by Esther Hautzig, with illustrations by Beth Peck. Copyright 2002, published by Frances Foster Books, a division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. 82 pages. Hardback. $15. A little girl named Sara, in 1939 Vilna, one day opens a large, white envelope that comes in the mail. It is from her Uncle Benjamin. What's inside? All the paperwork Mama and Grandma Hanna need so they can go to the World's Fair in America. But first, mama needs a picture of her mother, to complete the paperwork. Her sister, grouchy Aunt Lisa, volunteers to help find the photo. When Lisa searches for the picture, she finds something that is about to change Sara's life. It is a picture of her grandmother, but it's not Grandma Hanna. It is her biological grandmother, who died when Sara was 3 and about whom Sara never knew. It's an interesting premise, but sadly it just doesn't work in this book. There's a lot of whining here (How many times can Sara complain about not being allowed to accompany her mother and grandmother to the fair?). Also, few young adult readers are going to be comfortable with the idea that Sara's mother hid the truth from her because she thought her daughter had a negative image of stepmothers. A long time ago this was in fact true; women died, in childbirth, of diseases, and step- mothers who were not so nice came into the picture (which is why there are so many wicked ones in fairy tales: think p Who Was The Woman Who Wore The Hat? a meditation on the Holocaust, by Nancy Patz.
