dozen Jewish community leaders.
"We learned a lot about your
Jewish community over a hearty
breakfast," said Marietta T. Paragas,
CEO of the Shontoug Foundation

Encouraging Tolerance

Samer B. Mouallem, one of four
fellows from Israel, is an Israeli
Arab and administration manager
at the Arab Center for Alternative
Planning. He works with young
Arabs and Jews "to build a more
tolerant society from the grass
roots level and up," he said.
We just organized a young lead-
ership club for Arab and Jewish
teenagers. We're always looking for
ways to build bridges between
them. You have to do the same
thing in this Detroit area with the
[250,000] Arabs and [96,000]
Jews."
Sudarat Sereewat of Thailand is
director of an organization that
protects women and children vic-
timized by sex trafficking. "The
children start begging at age 4 or 5
and the girls are in the sex trade at
12 and 13," she said. "We must
work inside the police force to pro-
tect them."
Nora Kuntz is Hungary's national
director of Habitat for Humanity,
which recently built its 100th
home there for disadvantaged fami-
lies. "Like America, we have a
melting pot of diverse nationalities,
trying to work together,' she said.
Ronit Heyd is coordinator of the
Pluralism Project at Shatil in Israel,
the New Israel Fund's Training and
Empowerment Center for Social
Change Organizations and a free-
lance writer. Shalom Street's chil-
dren book section impressed her
the most. There, she found a book
titled Eyes, published in Israel —
with one of her stories in it. ❑
