LAKE SUPERIOR WHITEFISH Downtown Detroit is trying hard to come back to even a semblance of its glory days ... and dining spots like the new Congress Restaurant and Lounge go a long way in helping to achieve this coveted goal. FIRST TIME double-header was two-day feature by Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. Thanks to the children of the late Billy Jacobs, Robert Jacobs and Monni Must, the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inauguration showed off its new home and the adjacent Billy Jacobs Galleries at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield in a public opening for the first time. Even had there been more chairs for folks to sit on, it still would have been standing room only ... 100 invitations were sent out for the private pride but about 250 attended. The Hall of Fame has its own entrance now ... off 15 Mile (Maple) ... in the lower level ... where president Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, emceed pro- ceedings with family members of dis- eased inductees and living honorees unveiling the draped plaques. A large photo of Billy Jacobs hangs in prominence, and a computer screen nearby continually shows the exploits of inductees, past events by the foun- dation, its charities, etc. Next day was the first time in its history that the Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf & Tennis Invitational was held outdoors in its entirety. The start-to-finish festivities were held in middle to high-80s weather ... luckily with a slight wind that helped keep people from wilting in the heat. Advertising-like posters lined the building's upper level fence a la pro sporting events ... White linen table- cloths adorned patio tables and green linen napkins covered silverware on the five tables under green umbrellas. Robert Jacobs came back from Greece to attend the new Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame home inauguration and Hank Greenberg Invitational ... Hy Dorfman the only person I saw wearing a suit ... Few wore jackets ... Close friends calling Myron Milgrom "Mynie" because it's the only name they know him by ... Seymour Brode not getting dressed up as usual after the game, showing off his legs in shorts ... 2004 convertible won by Ted Berry, who wasn't there ... but started up for him with the win- ning key by Pete Yura. Yearly work by Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation Executive Director Steve Simons and right-hand gal Elayne Wolfson, director of communi- ty relations, is splendid. The food prepared by Mitch Laskowitz, general manager, and his staff at Tam O'Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield was excellent ... with not a single complaint as guys and gals went for seconds and thirds ... Seemed like whenever folks looked up, there was Dave Matz filling anoth- er plate. Fifty pounds of sea bass, 110 pounds of lamb chops, 85 pounds of filet tenderloins, 100 pounds of pasta, 50 pounds of vegetables, etc., for the usual large attendance. The outside award ceremony was from a podium on the porch ... former Baltimore Orioles third sacker Brooks Robinson, who received the 14th Annual Hank Greenberg Lifetime Achievement Award, was one of the best honoree question-answerers to hold a mike at the annual event ... Folks were in awe at his memory and knowledge. When original founder Alvin Foon contacted five gents with his "I've got an idea and want you to help me out" ... Billy Jacobs, Myron Milgrom, Seymour Brode, Mickey Fishman and Bob Steinberg ... no one could ever have dreamed that today it is with national recognition ... From that first meeting at the house of Alvin and Shirley Foon, the magnificent work it has done in the local community is outstanding ... as one of the few regional Jewish sports halls of fame in America. CONGRATS ... To Sarah Manson on her 80th birthday ... To Dr. Marshall Shapiro on his 64th birthday. THE GENTLEMAN WHO asked • to accompany her to a formal event at the Trowbridge wasn't fazed by the fact that Clara Silber was 90 years old ... And why should he be? ...
