his contempt for Arab leadership.
"If a water pipe breaks in Damascus,
it's an 'Israeli conspiracy,"' he sneers.
"It's never our own incompetence."
Similarly, Ibrahim, a genteel moun-
tain of a man, is surprisingly well dis-
posed toward the American people.
Asked about the ramifications of the
Bush administration's Iraq policy, he
shakes his head: "I have absolute con-
fidence in the U.S. Constitution ...
and the American people."
While Secretary of Defense
Rumsfeld snipes at Al-Jazeerah openly
— the film is 'full of sound bites from
Rumsfeld that have a new, darkly iron-
ic resonance in light of the prison
scandals — it is the only independent
network in the Arab world and, as a
State Department spokesman readily
acknowledges, a very useful outlet to
the Arab street for the United States.
"They have been very open to us, and
that's good," the spokesman says.
Finally, Control Room is a vivid
reminder of the costs of and necessity
for an unfettered and independent
press, even one that we may not
approve of. Two-thirds of the way
through the film, one of Al-Jazeerah's
correspondents in Iraq is killed in a
U.S. missile attack on the building
housing their Bagdad offices. Suddenly
the tone of the film darkens, and we
are remindedthat journalists in a war
zone are always in danger, every bit as
much as the soldiers and civilians they
are covering.
Control Room is a wonderfully enter-
taining film, filled with the proverbial
memorable characters. More than that,
it offers a look at a side of the Middle
East's many conflicts that is seldom
shown in U.S. media, albeit one that
many Jewish News readers will find
discomforting. All the more reason,
then, to go see it. ❑
Control Room is scheduled to
open Friday, June 18, at the
Landmark Maple Art Theatre in
. Bloomfield Township. Check
your local movie listings.
