more fragile pieces of life, like memories,
real. It means a legacy.
Have the children there as much as
they want when a family member is ill,
says Cohen, who also works with the
Kids Kicking Cancer organization and
Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg of
Southfield. "Involve the kids as much as
possible."
Prepare children for what they might
face, though, because the look of dying
probably will be new Tell them about
the tubes, about the hospital, that great-
grandpa will look different as he moves
closer to death.
Cohen spent years studying and work-
ing to learn what she knows, but that
was just the beginning. When Cohen
was pregnant with her son Alec, now 13,
her husband, Joe, was diagnosed with
cancer. By the time Cindy went into
labor, her husband was on chemothera-
py.
Joe Cohen was a law student, "a
teacher, a man who loved theater, who
worked with special-needs programs at
the Jewish Community Center," his wife
says. "He was a giving, warm, all-around
good guy."
He loved learning about Judaism and
was studying at Oak Park-based
Machon L'Torah. He adored children
and taught summer acting programs for
children, including hosting a traveling
children's performance troupe.
Alec was old enough to get to know
his father — Joe died when Alec was 2
— and Cindy made it a point to have
Joe in their lives, even when Joe became
terribly ill.
Whenever Joe was feeling up to it,
Cindy and Alec visited him in the hospi-
tal. When Joe couldn't breathe without
the help of a ventilator, Cindy explained
to her son exactly how his father would
appear before they went to see him. By
the time they got to his room, Alec was
ready to sit on his father's lap. Finally,
Alec understood that "Dada's body
stopped working."
After Joe died, Cindy spoke often
with Alec about his father, part of keep-
ing Joe "alive in Alec's heart and mind."
Today, the two still enjoy hearing the
tapes Joe made, where he reads Alec's
favorite stories. Alec recently became bar
mitzvah, and as he stood on the Temple
Beth El bimah, he was wrapped in his
father's tallit.
Cohen encourages others to "make
someone who has died as much a part of
your life as possible." Take a grandfa-
ther's favorite shirt and sew it into a
teddy bear for his grandchildren, she
suggests. Tell favorite stories from his
life.
After Joe's death, Cindy wrote Daddy's
