crossed the Russian border of Poland
and was placed in a Russian jail for
buying spools of thread and trading
them for food.
When the German-Soviet Pact dis-
solved in June of 1941, the Germans
invaded the town of Bialystok, where
he was in prison. He escaped from
jail and the German army and
returned to his home in Makow,
which had been transformed into a
ghetto.
He was transported to Auschwitz-
Birkenau in 1942 at the age of 16.
He was forced out of Auschwitz on a
death march in January of 1945 and
was liberated by the Russians at the
age of 19 in Germany in March of
1945.
He moved to New York City in
1951 and retired to Florida in 1991,
spending summers in West
Bloomfield.
Mr. Unger is survived by his
daughter, Barbara H. Wenninger of
West Bloomfield; son-in-law, Ben J.
Wenninger; loving grandchildren,
Zachary, Justin and Jacqueline
Wenninger.
