rkadiy Ongeyberg spent his life learning,
teaching, writing poetry and leading.
Mr. Ongeyberg, 76, of Southfield, a
leader in the Russian Jewish community, died of
complications from surgery on June 1, 2004.
"He was very strong and very friendly," said his
daughter, Irina Zager. "He had a good sense of
humor, but he was very responsible and intense
about whatever he was doing."
Mr. Ongeyberg was the director of a school in his
native country of Belarus before immigrating to the
Detroit area in 1992.
"He loved America, met many good friends here,
and he was very appreciative for everything, espe-
cially the local Jewish community and how they
helped immigrants in many ways," said Zager.
Five years ago, Mr. Ongeyberg became president
of the Russian Jewish World War II Association of
Veterans and Invalids, where his leadership skills

took over said Riva. Latinsky, former director of the
Russian Acculturation Program at the Jewish
Community Center in Oak Park.
"He used to approach me with all kinds of ideas,"
said Latinsky. "Every year we did a Chanukah pro-
gram, incorporating the veterans' birthdays with
lighting the candles."
Under his leadership, the veteran's organization
collected money every year for Israel
and participated in Federation's
Annual Campaign — raising $12,000
in one year, she said.
The group also supported the
Jewish National Fund, Latinsky said.
"When a veteran dies, they send
money to Israel to plant a tree. It's a
forest of trees there, and there will be
a tree planed in his memory, too."
Zager remembers an energetic
father, and a perfectionist. He liked to
walk — he swam every day — and
was very active for his age, she said.
