how many times do you get to hear
that in a mainstream Jewish venue?"
The event was eye opening for Beth

ested in the topic who wanted to hear
community opinions. She said she

They look like shutters. Work like
blinds. To look at them you'd swear
they're real wood shutters-. Buy you
can open and close the slats, or raise
and lower them, just like a blind.
Best of all, they're EverWood®,
an alternative wood blind with the
character and warmth of real wood.
Which means they won't crack, peel,
warp or fade. Even in humid areas
like the kitchen or bathroom.

impressed that Gerzon challenged the
community to "make attempts to
. reach out to the 'protestors,' to deter-
mine in an adult way what our mes-
sage is, what we're trying to say.
"I was really astonished that we've
made such an impact in the Ann Arbor
Jewish community," he said. "Within
the eight to 10 people I was circling
with [and in circles other group mem-
bers were in], we all noticed the issue
of the vigils came up."
Gerzon also encouraged getting
more youths involved in the conversa-
tions, combining learning and action
to promote change, and possibly put-
ting together a "factbook" or common
document for the community.
Ann Arbor resident Barbara Stahler-
Sholk said she had some hesitation
about the event but came away pleas-
antly surprised.
"I came here very skeptical," she
said. "I thought it really would be rail-
roading one point of view over anoth-
er and so far it isn't that way. I think
there's already been tons of discussion
on this issue for years now ... but I
think Federation [Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County] is continuing_the
process."
She was pleased to see her viewpoint
expressed alongside a number of oth-
ers; which does not always happen,
she said.
"Because "the fundamental pui-pose
of the event was to find ways we could
support Israel, my response was that
[one] way was to end the occupation
and find a way to live together in true

and try to read more news sources, in
hopes that pursuing more information
will help "get (her) opinion to gel."
"I have always felt that I'd like to
see peace in Israel, but I don't know
how to get there," she said.
During the time allotted for groups
to discuss how the dialogue on differ-
ences could be improved, she said one
idea her group had was to organize a
similar forum for Jews and
Palestinians. "To be able to show that
it could happen in a peaceful way,
that's what I'd hope for."

`Great Beginning'

The event was termed both a success
and "a great beginning" by Jeff Levin,
executive director of the Jewish
Federation of Washtenaw County, an
event sponsor. He looks forward to
bringing the local facilitators and the
planning team together to discuss the
next step and potential future forums.
"I got the strong sense from the par-
ticipants that they appreciated the
kind of unique venue that was created
and would look forward to doing
things like this again in the future," he
said.
"I hope people walked way with the
feeling that we created more light than
heat and that their own perspective
was informed by what they experi-
enced," he said. 'And that they left the
event with a commitment to continue
the dialogue and to continue to sup-
port Israel in a way that they find
meaningful." ❑
