To the Southfield & Lathrup Village Jewish Community:

A defining hallmark of the Jewish community is the value we place on quality edu-
cation. Good schools are critical to the quality of community life and to preserving
property values. As citizens we bear a responsibility to each other. That responsibili-
ty includes educating our children and the children of others.

as Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur.
"For a college that has a budget of
$136.3 million, it's important to have
Jewish representation on the board,"
she said.
Wiser considers one of her greatest
accomplishments the creation of the
CREST (Combined Regional
Emergency Services Training) site for
Homeland Security, a reality-based
"community" for the training of law
enforcement and other emergency per-
sonnel, housed on the Auburn Hills
OCC campus.
She has participated in the selection
of four chancellors of the college and
was instrumental to the movement to
maintain on-site childcare for employ-
ees.
Elliot Parnes hopes to bring his expe-
rience as an attorney working with
juveniles and their families to the OCC
board.
"Every day I witness what is happen-
ing to the youth of today," he said. "I
understand the importance of provid-

ing the opportunity for all individuals
who seek a higher education. From a
Jewish perspective, there is no question
that education is always of the utmost
value. I was raised in a very strong
Jewish home where hard work and
learning were encouraged.
"There are various issues facing the
board of trustees at Oakland
Community College," Parnes said.
`Always important is the continued fis:
cal viability of the college. The board ---
will need to remain ever vigilant over
the way public funds are spent and cre-
ate imaginative ways. to increase the
bottom line."
If elected, Parnes intends to help the
board establish and implement a for-
mal strategic plan.
Other candidates for the OCC board
of trustees include Kathleen Blessing of
Rochester Hills, Christopher Cornelius
of Royal Oak, Dawn Davis of Pontiac,
Thomas Kuhn of Troy, Anne Scott
(incumbent) of West Bloomfield,
Janice Simmons (incumbent) of
Rochester Hills and Carl Williams of
Royal Oak. ❑

The operating millage for the Southfield Public Schools expired last Dec. 31st.
Without a millage renewal the 10,000-plus student district will lose approximately
56 percent of its operating budget. The district's comprehensive program, much of
what was built by the Jewish community decades ago, will be decimated. We simply
cannot allow that to happen whether we have children or grandchildren attending
the public schools or not.

A millage failure will also impact children who attend our Yeshivot in Southfield.
The Southfield Public Schools provide special education, speech pathology, counsel-
ing and evaluation, preschooling and transportation services to the local non-public
schools. All of these valuable services will be eliminated if the millage fails.

On June 14th voters will be asked to support a millage rate that is 2.25 mills lower
than what was approved in 1994 and 1998. This millage reduction election is about
maintaining a comprehensive program so that Southfield may continue to have
nationally accredited schools. Despite the lower millage rate, reduced state school
aid and inflation, Southfield Public Schools will continue to offer an array of pro-
grams and services to meet the differing educational needs of our youth.

I urge you to vote YES on June 14th on the Millage Reduction proposal. Our need
to support this millage to maintain the viability of our community, protect our
property values and, most importantly, provide for its youngest citizens is essential.

If the renewal fails, your property value will also decline in substantially greater
numbers than the tax dollars you will be saving.

Please help us preserve our community.
