Foundation Grants JFS

Jewish Family Service has received a
grant of $500,000 from the Kresge
Foundation. The grant is earmarked for
the JFS Capital Campaign to build a
new main headquarters in West
Bloomfield.
The new build-
ing, named in
honor of Graham
and Sally Orley and
Joseph and Suzanne
Orley, will be a
30,000-square-foot
facility directly
across from the
Eugene and Marcia
Applebaum Jewish
Community
Campus.
To date, more
than $7.5 million
has been raised toward the campaign's
$8 million goal. "The Kresge grant is a
`challenge grant' conditional upon us
raising the remaining funds by Jan. 1,
2005," said JFS President Terran Uemis
of Bloomfield Hills.
Groundbreaking on the new facility
took place in October 2003. The Kresge

Foundation is an independent, private
foundation created by the personal gifts
of Sebastian S. Kresge. It is not affiliated
with any corporation or organization.
Jewish Family Service is headquartered
in Southfield with a branch office in
West Bloomfield.

ALS Gala Names Chair

O

ALS of Michigan will host its annual
Ultimate Charity Auction and Gala
with Florine Mark Ross as honorary
chair. Her husband, Bill, recently died
of ALS.
Lila Lazarus of WDIV-TV will emcee
the Saturday night, June 5, event at the
Ford Conference & Event Center in
Dearborn.
- The event will include a live auction,

dancing, dinner and drinks. Proceeds
from the auction will provide critically
needed support for the Respite Care
Assistance program and for ALS
research at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor. The Respite Care
Assistance Program — partially funded
through the auction — allows a primary
caregiver a break from caring for an ALS
patient.

Chairpeople are Lisa Rosenberg and
Sheri Mark-Slaim, Florine's daughter.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis);
more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's
Disease, is a fatal neuro-degenerative dis-
ease that paralyzes over time. ALS is not
a rare disease. Nearly 300,000 people
living with ALS in the United States
today will die from the disease if a cure
is not found.

"It's really the whole community and
all our families and friends who have
been so supportive coming together to
help create awareness," said Rosenberg,
who lost her father to ALS. "I can't help
my dad any more — all I can do is help
the people who have ALS today."
