Call for Nominees for the 17' Annual Berman Award for Outstanding Professional Service created by Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Eligibility for Nomination: All Jewish communal professiorlals ei - riployed by local constituent agencies of the Je\Nish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, who have been working in the Detroit Jewish community a minimum of five years, may be nominated for the Mandel and Madeleine Berman Award pate in both," said Merry/ Schwartz who will lead the relay service along with Geri Zacks, both of West Bloomfield. "The minyan was originally formed by a group of volunteers who started it during the time their kids were in reli- gious school," Rabbi Moskovitz said. "They wanted there to be a place for those observing a yahrtzeit or who were in mourning." According to Schwartz, who is the synagogue's shivah committee chair, the idea for the minyan came from Zacks. "Geri recognized, by the questions asked at many of the shivah homes, that we had a need to have a morning min- yan," Schwartz said. "It was so well received it has contin- ued even now that Sunday school class- es have ended." Paterni, who will walk at the relay in memory of her in-laws and in honor of her friend Pam, who survived cancer, finds it important that the service also includes a reading of names of those who are ill. "Almost everyone in our temple has been touched by cancer," Terman said. "For me, the relay was a way to honor the survivors and memorialize our loved ones."
