hat better way to celebrate summer than with a trip
to Mackinac Island — our own jewel preserved by
time. This scenic island has no automobiles and no
Wal-Marts or Home Depots. It's a Victorian vision of
natural beauty. In this Platinum issue, writer Susan Laubach takes us
on a "Grand Getaway" in diary form. Through Laubach's eyes we
learn about the history of the island, the decor of the Grand Hotel
and we meet a local proprietor. It's no surprise that Mackinac Island
State Park is honored by National Geographic magazine as one of the
finest in the nation.
If you are interested in a delightful summer, read Judith Cookis
Reuben's letter-by-letter guide for summertime fun. She spells out
the hottest trends from chic fashions to outdoor art fairs in her
"Summer Delight" spread.
In our June issue, let me introduce you to the Gilman sisters. As
it happens, I watched these young ladies grow up; they lived across
the street from me in West Bloomfield. Today, they are young entre-
preneurs bringing the first Carvel franchise to our area. As an ice
cream aficionado, I know all about Carvel. I'm a regular at the
Carvel in Boca Raton with my friend, former Detroiter Helene
Goldstein Kessler. The Kesslers introduced me to Carvel in New
York years ago.
All this talk of ice cream makes me in the mood for a large choco-
late cone. And by the way, I'm also craving some Mackinac Island
fudge.
As summer approaches, I wish you lots of fun in the sun and good
times.
