Back home in New York, Bernstein
writes and broadcasts frequently on clas-
sical music radio station WQRX-FM,
including four or five broadcasts from
Tanglewood, the Lenox, Mass., summer
home of the Boston Symphony.
Growing up in the politically liberal
home of one of America's most conspic-
uous intellectual Jewish figures, Jamie
Bernstein considers herself a cultural
Jew. "Judaism is the flavor I grew up
with," she said. "I don't do ritual obser-
vance --- but I put on a whiz-bang
seder every year."
Like Leonard Bernstein himself, his
daughter is interested in the gamut of
musical and intellectual experiences.
"I would define myself mostly as a
writer/broadcaster," she said. 'And I do
a lot of running around with my chil-
dren."
As far as her father, he was "the most
all-around musician there was,"
Bernstein said. "He was absolutely
remarkable on the lectern, on the com-
posing page or on the podium. But I
would have to say it was the teaching he
was proudest of"
