Don't be afraid to enter the Deep Blue

There is a fresh face in the local restaurant scene. Deep Blue,
owned by Geoffrey Browning and Chick Taylor, is a contemporary
look to classic seafood. Maple Pecan Crusted Pickerel, Macadamia
Crusted Tuna with Mango Red Pepper Sauce, Jumbo Lump Crab
Cakes with Cajun Cream Sauce join old favorites Lake Perch,
Seared Salmon with Caramelized Capers and Flounder with
Deviled Crabmeat in creating an exciting, diverse menu. And if
seafood isn't your plate of halibut, there is a Spice Rubbed Bone
on Rib Eye, Double Cut Marinated Loin Lamb Chops and Angus
Filet Mignon. As a way of introducing ourselves, we would like to
offer an enticing deal. Come see us at 30855 Southfield Road and
bring this ad and we will take 20% off your bill, Monday -

Friday.

group called Kara's Flowers with
good friends James Valentine, Jesse
Carmichael, Mickey Madden and
Ryan Dusick.
The group first performed live in
1995. By 1997, Kara's Flowers
released its first CD, Fourth World,
on Reprise. The group later left
Reprise and renamed themselves
Maroon 5, signing on with Octone
Records.
Maroon 5's CD, Songs About Jane,
already has produced a number of
Top 40 hits, including not only
"This Love" but "Harder to
Breathe."
Your daughter may enjoy the
band's songs, but you might want to
think twice before letting her watch
their music videos. MTV and VH1
both regard the This Love video —
featuring a half-naked Levine — so
steamy it is edited when played dur-
ing daytime hours.

Q: I remember years ago when the
movie Funny Girl came out every-

one was talking about the curious
coincidence: Egyptian actor Omar
Sharif playing a Jew, gambler Nicky
Arnstein, husband of Fanny Brice.
Recently, though, a friend of mine
said Arnstein wasn't even Jewish.
Could that be?
A: It did indeed cause quite a stir
when Sharif was chosen to play
Arnstein, whom just about everyone
believed to be a Jew.
But he wasn't.
Arnstein, born Jules W. Arnstein,
was the son of Moses Arndstein (his
father dropped the "d" from the
family name), a Jewish immigrant
from Berlin, and Thekla Van Shaw, a
Dutch gentile. He grew up in a lov-
ing, warm home — raised as an
Episcopalian.
Jules became "Nicky" after riding a
nickel-plated bicycle in a race. Early
on, he met up with the infamous
Gondorf brothers, a couple of con
men, then moved on to Arnold
Rothstein, best remembered as the
man who fixed the 1919 World
Series.
Like Rothstein, Arnstein loved
gambling. Unlike Rothstein,
Arnstein was a habitual loser. He lost
all of his money, then he lost his
wife Fanny's money too, even pawn-
' ing her jewelry to pay gambling
debts.
Arnstein was an appealing sort of
fellow; though not especially hand-
some, the ladies loved him, especial-
ly Brice, who sang her famous My
Man about her sweetheart. II
