Marc Kay of West Bloomfield has
joined Congregation Shaarey Zedek as
director of high school and youth. He is
an English teacher at Lakeland High
School in White Lake. Jolen Marya
Gedridge of Livonia is Shaarey Zedek's
new communications coordinator. She
previously worked as an editor of an
international publishing company.
Carrie (Aspel) Hearshen of Farmington
Hills recently graduated from the
University of Jerusalem in Bel Air,
Calif., with a master of arts degree in
Jewish education.
Josh Hearshen of Oak Park recently
graduated from the University of
Judaism in Bel Air, Calif., with a mas-
ter's degree in rabbinbic studies.
Matthew Kleinberg, an Oakland
University student, was recently named
Tutor of the Year for 2004 by the
Michigan Tutorial Association. He is a
spring 2004 graduate with a dual major
in mathematics and economics and is a
supplemental instruction leader and
peer tutor for math, economics and
physics. He has worked at the Academic
Skills Center at Oakland University 20
hours a week for the past 3 1 /2 years.
The Gerald L. Levin Champions for
Children award from the Southfield-
based Orchards Children's Services was
recently awarded to Wayne County
Third Judicial Circuit Court Judge
Sheila Gibson Manning of Detroit.
Dr. Kathy Storchan
has been elected to
the board of directors
of Stagecrafters, the
Royal Oak theater
group at the historic
Baldwin Theater.
The theater has been
named by HOUR
Detroit magazine as
best community the-
ater.
State Rep. Steve Tobocman, D-Detroit,
was named. Community Development
Advocate of the Year by the
Community Economic Development
Association of Michigan. He was hon-
ored for his longstanding support and
advocacy of community development,
including his work to develop the
Michigan Affordable Housing Fund, his
legislation to create a state companion
to the Federal New Markets Tax Credit,
his work on Gov. Granholm's Land Use
Leadership Council and his advocacy to
create new government structures to
encourage redevelopment of vacant, tax-
reverted property. He is the founder and
former director of Community Legal
Resources, a nonprofit initiative that
has linked 300 nonprofits with lawyers
at the state's top law firms. He serves
southwest Detroit, where bringing new
jobs and housing are priorities.
Iry Handelman of Oak Park recently
won first prize at the Farmington's
William Costick Senior Art Festival for
a painting of a typical, old, European
street.
Sandy Schuster of Oak Park has been
appointed director of development for
Fresh Air Society and Tamarack
Camps.
Rebecca Matoff, 96-year-old former
Detroiter of Beverly Hills, Calif., was
inducted as a founding fellow of the
One Hundred and Twenty Society of
the Jerusalem
College of Technol-
ogy. JCT is a train-

tech fields of corn-
puters, software, elec-
tronics as well as

The Anti-Defamation League recently
named its latest list of Women of
Achievement. Among those honored
was Edwina Davis of West Bloomfield,
former executive director and past
president of the Michigan Jewish
AIDS Coalition. Kathleen Straus of
Detroit was chosen as recipient of the
Lifetime Achievement Award; she is
president of the Michigan State Board
of Education and former president of
the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Yad Ezra Pays Tribute
Yad Ezra.'s leadership recently paid trib-
ute to volunteer Dotty Smith.
The event, chaired by June Stillman,
is held every year to honor the Yad
Ezra volunteers and board members.

Smith, who has been
a volunteer at the

and has served as a
