Priscilla Brouillette
"The most important decision the
board will make is the selection of a
new superintendent since this individ-
ual will set the vision for the entire dis-
trict. We will be looking for someone
with strong communication and mana-
gerial skills. Other large issues facing
the district include renegotiating our
employee contracts and struggling to
keep existing programs running despite
the cuts in state funding."

Gary Sharp
"The most pressing issue will be
choosing the replacement for Dr.
Maxfield as district superintendent. If I
am re-elected, I will base my decision on
the individual's ability to implement our
vision statement at the building level. As
the district spokesperson, the candidate
will have to be able to maintain the col-
laboration we have developed with the

district employees and the relationship
we have with our community. He or she
will also have to provide leadership in
the budget development process as we
face continuing shortfalls from the state
educational fund."

Michael Sullivan
"Improving quality classroom educa-
tion and school performance within
current fiscal constraints needs to be the
central focus of the board. I will work
to reduce financial strain by conducting
an efficiency audit to redirect needed
funds to classroom activities by collabo-
rating with local private schools and .
reaching out to area businesses. I will
also support programs to engage parents
in the education of our children. I
would promote a proactive communica-
tion policy and implement a 'Code of
Conduct' for all board members and
board meeting participants."

Cheryl Swaim
"The most important issue facing the
FPS community is the relatively flat
rate of funding provided by the state's
per-pupil allowance in relation to the
increased costs our school district is fac-
ing. Fiscal responsibility is paramount;
we have to be more astute in our budg-
eting process and prioritize the ways
our money is spent, utilizing such tools
as a zero-based budgeting concept.
Assessment tools must be used to
ensure programs and resources that
allow every student to realize his or her
full potential. Also, students should
learn that we are citizens of the United
States first. Knowledge of the world
around us is important but should not
overshadow the importance of being a
responsible U.S. citizen with a solid
foundation of knowledge. Effective
communication at all levels is critical."

John Goshorn
"In addition to the 'New Attitude
Initiatives' developed by Cheryl Swaim,
Eric Rosenberg and me, I support a rig-
orous review of the district budget to
identify areas where expenditures can
be reduced. I believe we should offer
foreign language instruction in the pri-
mary and middle schools to prepare
students for the challenges of a global
economy. To uphold the district's high
standards of education, our students'
progress should be measured by testing
their basic reading and math skills in
grades 1 8. All of us should remember
that we have only one opportunity to
educate our students. Every day we
need to make our school district one
that makes every member of our com-
munity proud." ❑
