from last year's publicity and reaction.
But the community remains vulnera-
ble and exposed, said Cantor Gale.
"We certainly can feel more protect-
ed in larger communities, but this is a
lesson that we do not know who our
neighbors are.
Betsy Kellman, director of the
Bloomfield-Hills-based ADL Michigan
Region, said ADL has kept a file on
Wickstrom since last year. According to
some reports, Wickstrom often leaves
the area to preach his message on the
road, but is planning a series of weekend
seminars at the furniture store.
According to ADL reports, 25,000-
50,000 people in the U.S. support the
Christian Identity doctrine.
No anti-Semitic incidents have taken
place at Temple Israel, but the Christian
Identity followers elsewhere have been
prone to violence.
Both Eric Rudolph, who bombed
Atlanta's Olympic Park in 1996, and
Buford Furrow, who shot up a Jewish
Community Center in Los Angeles in
1999, have been linked to the move-
ment.
In Bay City, law enforcement agencies
are still keeping an eye on Wickstrom,
although Special Agent Walter Reynolds
of the local FBI office would neither
confirm nor deny that an active investi-
gation is underway.
The Jewish News tried to contact
Wickstrom about last year's events and
his pjeaching. His response came via e-
mail from Pastor August B. Kreis III, an
associate:
Wickstrom "does not like to lower
himself dealing with jews [sic] until he
can deal with them biblically as our
Father instructs us," it read. "Since he
has received many requests to speak at
various functions across the country
being sponsored by Pro-White record
labels, he felt that he must continue to
get the Racial Covenant Identity mes-
sage out personally to the Skinheads
across this nation whom are His foot
soldiers and Phineas Priests in training.
"This was much more important than
sitting behind a microphone four
evenings a week reaching mainly arm-
chair warriors."
Said Dr. Jonathan Abramson, Temple
Israel president, "I don't think people
take people like this seriously enough
unless trouble arises.
"Some of our community are very
frightened by his presence, as maybe
they should be." ❑
