MASON I. HIMELHOCH, 71, of
Southfield, died May 24, 2004. He
proudly served in
the U.S. Army
during the Korean
Conflict. After his
discharge, he
earned a degree
from Michigan
State University in
hotel and restau-
rant management.
His love of chil-

dren led him into
teaching he estab-
lished the food service program at
Highland Park Community High
School and created a student-run
restaurant. Mr. Himelhoch earned a
master's degree in education from
Wayne State University in 1972. For
many years, he also taught cooking
classes at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Mason and his wife Annie volun-
teered at the Prentis Federation
Apartments, receiving the 1999
award for outstanding service given
by the Prentis residents. For almost
two decades, he was an active mem-
ber of the Shaarey Zedek Men's
Club, where he organized the
Mason's Men's Club Caterers. He was
honored by the group as their man
of the year in 1995. On his 70th
birthday, he achieved his dream of
publishing an autobiographical book.
Several years earlier, he had begun to
e-mail Shabbat greetings to his chil-
dren living in various parts of the
U.S. and Israel. These much beloved
weekly accounts of his life, philo-
sophical musings and blessings to his
children were collected in a volume
titled the Untied Mind.
Mr. Himelhoch is survived by his
wife of 38 years, Annie; loving chil-
dren, Steven and Hideko Silverstein,
Michael and Leslie Silverstein, Seth
and Sheila Jelen Himeloch, Renee
