Films To Remember I was deeply touched and inspired by the films I saw at this year's JCC Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival ("Movie Clips," April 23, page 39). The films I saw not only expanded my knowledge of small pieces of Holocaust history, but also enriched my soul and my identity as a Jew. So artful were these films, so true to their creators' vision and to the human hearts of those whose story was unfolding on the screen, that I found myself being transported back and forth in time into the worlds of the film: Shanghai, Denmark, Poland, Amsterdam, Germany and an impov- erished town in the South. Here were fact-based renditions of incidents, based on the stories of actu- al survivors, that showed us what it really felt like from the point of view of: young children given away by their parents to Christian families for hid- ing from the Nazis; privileged German Jewish families seeking sanctuary in Shanghai and coexisting with impov- erished Chinese; the Danes who cate- gorically refused to turn their nation's Jews over to the Nazis and orchestral- - ed protective efforts to save them; one decent SS officer who, when he found out that the chemical he developed for purifying water was being used to murder Jews, fought valiantly, albeit unsuccessfully, to stop the atrocities; and the most moving of all, the stu- dents, administration and faculty of a middle school in Whitwell, Tenn., who upon learning about the Holocaust, launched a project built on compassion and tolerance that rever- berated around the world. I realize now that this is the perfect way to tell the whole story of the Holocaust — in little pieces of indi- vidual humanity that everyone can relate to. The great universal themes are all here: exile and return; survival against all odds; tolerance amidst intolerance; challenge and triumph. I hope and pray someone will find a way to distribute and market these films to the general public. A Woman's Right It is understandable that the Jewish News would present both views regarding "choice" and the recent March for Women's Lives in Washington (Other Views, May 21, page 74). Betsy Snider Heuer Edith Broida West Bloomfield Farmington Hills . . " Worthy Of Emulation I was so touched by the great article "His Field Of Green" (May 21, page 114). Irwin Green and his wife, Bethea, are perfect examples of how we should all be in real life. Irwin has signed many big checks for Israel and Detroit's Jewish commu- nity. This article shows the real Greens and their unselfish "doing the right thing." Several years ago, Southfield busi- nessman Seymour Brode started a project, Tennis for Gaza, which included a mosque and classrooms. Irwin joined us and we talked about expanding the program to include other sports and calling it Sports for Peace. Irwin pledged a huge amount of money and contacted other inter- national foundations until the current Palestinian intifada made it all but impossible. Repelling Terror A little food for thought from Federation's Michigan Miracle Mission 4 to Israel: Two things point- ed out to us by our extraordinary guide Allan Marks regarding "the fence," and worth passing on to-all. First, on the Adat Shalom Synagogue Bus 6, "the fence" was not referred to as a "fence," or "wall," but as an Anti-Terrorist Barrier (ATB), which seems to be a much better description. As we rode in our bus throughout Israel, Allan always point- ed out the ATB to us and explained why Israel must have it. The second important statement Allan made was that "Israel is not put- ting the wall up ... Terror put the wall up. Israel is merely constructing it." Try these "talking points" in your discus- sions with your friends. Mickey Levin Farmington Hills
