Teens BEM Elects New Officers ichigan Region B'nai B'rith Youth Organization held council elections last weekend at Camp Maas in Ortonville. Some 235 BBYO members elected regional leaders for 2004-05. Jonathan Wright. Jr. of Tzavah AZA, a junior at West Bloomfield High School, was elected AZA president. Wright is a founding member of Tzavah and was coordinator of a young leadership conclave in 2003. He attended BBYO's Kallah and International Leadership Training Conference last summer. Serving with Wright are Jake Feldman, a Walled Lake Central sophomore and member of Shapiro AZA, as vice pres- ident/programming; Eric Rosenbloom, a North Farmington junior and member of Jolson AZA as vice president/member- ship; and Bowen Vernan, a Shapiro member who is home- schooled in Grand Blanc, as vice president/com- munity service. AZA counselor. Hoffman is outgoing AZA Council president. Katie Blender, a junior at Birmingham Groves High School, was elected BBG president. Blender is the outgoing president of Achayot BBG and attended both the Kallah and International Leadership Training Conference last summer. BBG officers elected with Blender are: Audra Lachman, a member of Ruach BBG and North Farmington junior who will be vice president/programming; Jennifer Beitner of Disraeli BBG, a Jewish Academy sophomore, as vice presi- dent/membership; and Ashley Schwartz, a West Bloomfield sophomore and Achayot member, as vice president/communi- ty service. Additional BBG officers include: Sammie Unger, a Koach member and sophomore at West Bloomfield High, as treasur- er; Brittany Braudo, a sophomore at North Farmington and member of Ruach BBG as secretary; and Alexandra Peri, a member of Ahavah BBG and West Bloomfield High School junior, as newspaper editor. Whitney Aidenbaum, a Jewish Academy junior, who is leading the creation of a new BBG chapter, will serve as BBG counselor. Aidenbaum is the outgo- ing BBG Council president. Series Studies Bible The Congregation B'nai Moshe Kolel Moshe Institute for Lifelong Learning will offer a four-part adult study series with Rabbi Charles Popky titled "Angels, Messiahs, and Martyrs: The Strange World of Post-Biblical Jewish Literature" on four Mondays at noon, starting June 7 at the synagogue. Ben Feldman, Arthur Giants and Kory West worked with Jacob Hampton to win the National Marketing Quiz Bowl Championship. West Bloomfield's team has won the Michigan championship three straight years. Ben Feldman was the only returnee to this year's Quiz Bowl team. West Bloomfield's Ali Greene earned Top Ten in the nation honors in the Retail Marketing Research written event. Jessica Newman was a national finalist in the Retail Merchandising Management Level event. Josh Rott earned a certificate of excellence in Vehicles and Petroleum Marketing. Michael Terner also participated in the competition. Registrations are being taken for the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a project of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for Jewish Education and the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, the mini- school is a concept in Jewish learn- ing for adults of all ages and back- grounds. The mini-school is a two-year pro- gram and courses are taught by fac- ulty who encourage group discus- sion. There are no prerequisites, grades or exams. Graduates receive a certificate of Jewish studies from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and are eligible to participate in an optional seminar in Israel as well as courses designated specifically for Melton graduates. Two classes will be offered: 7-9:15 p.m. Tuesdays at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township or 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesdays at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield.
