Sukhothai regularly by friends ... It's a
white angel hair type of rice noodle he
serves with curry on the side.
Some customers ask when he will
have Kow Neaw Ma Maung ... Since it
usually takes about two days to make,
not too many places have this dish, or
prepare the rice properly ... Tawat has
it as a special ... made with sticky rice,
ripe mangoes peeled and cut into
pieces widthwise and coconut milk.
Sukhothai is open seven days,
Monday-Thursday, 11-9; Friday, 11-
10; Saturday, 12-10 and Sunday,
noon-9.
It is a very clean restaurant ... and
Tawat a smiling personable gent ...
with perfect use of the English lan-
guage ... and a talent for dining
authenticity ... His Sukhothai restau-
rant is the kind that brings people
back for more.
PERHAPS IT SHOULD be called
"Personalities and Celebrities Day" ...
because that's what it has turned out
to be. Plenty of gaping smiles and
autograph seekers at the Hank
Greenberg Memorial Golf & Tennis
Invitational ... 14th annual is Monday,
June 7, at Tam O'Shanter Country
Club in West Bloomfield.
Hank is one of the biggest names of
them all ... so it is worthy that the
"name" biggies would be on hand to
honor the late baseball great.
Major League Baseball Hall of
Famer third baseman Brooks
Robinson, this year's recipient of the
Hank Greenberg Memorial Lifetime
Achievement Award, joins former
awardees Dr. Bobby Brown, George
Kell, Al Rosen, Ralph Kiner, Joe
Garagiola, Ted Williams, Tommy
Lasorda, Dick Schaap, Ernie Banks
and Dave Winfield.
For more info on golf or tennis or
dinner and banquet only, call Elayne
Wolfson, (248) 788-0921 ... Who
knows, if you're there, you might even
win that 2004 BMW convertible.
THE LATE Alan King loved to play
the local scene ... A big reason was the
warm and receptive audiences ...
Another was because of the wonderful
delicatessens we used to have.
King loved delicatessen food, espe-
cially pickles ... and in 1998, he joined
actor Paul Newman and former Los
Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy
Lasorda in having association with
kosher food ... Alan had his own
kosher pickles on the shelves in New

York and Florida ... called Alan King's
Perfect Pickle ... Don't know if they
are still there, but they came in jars
shaped like pickle barrels ... It was nat-
ural for him, being raised in a kosher
home where his mother bottled her
own pickles.
When time would allow, he enjoyed
having delicatessen fare ... After one of
his appearances here, Alan asked to go
to the smallest deli that we had ... and
so it was to the Onion Roll Deli on
Woodward in Royal Oak ... When we
got inside, he looked around and
quipped, "I've eaten salami sandwiches
bigger than this!"
A book Alan King co-authored sev-
eral years ago is called, Is Salami and
Eggs Better Than Sex?
THOSE WHO REMEMBER the
beef Wellington Benno Steinborn used
to serve at Benno's restaurant ... will
look twice at the rendition of some-
thing very similar at Pepino's in
Walled Lake ... It's their brisket of beef
in puff pastry.
CONGRATS ... To Arthur Horwitz,
Jewish News publisher ... on his 50th
birthday ... To Sima Paar, on her
birthday.
IT WAS AT THE Westerner Beef
Buffet restaurant, 22 years ago, that
B'nai B'rith gave birth to its annual
golf classic.
Jack Cochran, owner with son Gary,
wanted to do something for the BB
youth and was asked, "What about a
golf classic to raise money?" ... "I'm
not Jewish," Jack replied, "but I'll help
all I can."
When Jack passed on,. Gary, owner
of Beau Jack's, took over and has done
a remarkable job.
The 22nd Annual B'nai B'rith Golf
Classic will be Monday, June 14, at
Lyons Oaks Golf Club in Wixom ...
with proceeds benefiting the BB Youth
serving agencies.
No increase in cost ... still $250
($225 for golfers 35 and younger) ...
First time a Corvette.will be given for
a hole-in-one ... Was always a plain
Chevy. Eli Zaret will auction gifts and
autograph his book, '84— The Last of
the Great Tigers: Untold Stories from an
Amazing Season.
Michael Fishman and Ron Bittker
are co-chairmen ... B'nai B'rith office
for more info is (248) 646-3100. O
