Like Hanani, they have performed
as soloists, recitalists and chamber
musicians around the world. Berick,
who attended the Tel Aviv University
Music Academy and played in a
string quartet even during his three
years in the Israeli army, began play-
ing the piano at age 6, "but there
was no room in our apartment for a
piano, so I switched to a more corn-
pact instrument, the violin," he said.
"My father also was a violinist."
Coming to America, Berick stud-
ied with renowned violinist Henry
Meyer at the Cincinnati College
Conservatory of Music, and has won
competitions and awards throughout
the world. He plays on an 1852
Honore Derazy Pere violin, which he
bought in Canada last year for
"about six figures."
"These violins get better with age
because the aging of the wood makes
them resonate better," said Berick,
who plays 45-50 concerts yearly.
Avni, of Manhattan, prefers a
Steinway Grand piano, but began
playing on a synthesizer at age 11 on
his parents' farm. He made his debut
with the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra under conductor Zubin
Mehta. Before coming to America
10 years ago, he took first prize in
both the coveted Clairmont and
Rachmaninoff competitions in
Israel.
"When you travel around for con-
certs, you have to learn to play on
every kind of a piano," he said. "I
can handle any of them — as long as
they're tuned."
Added Hanani: "The Weisberg
concert should be enjoyable for
everyone. Putting concerts together
is a lot like planning a gourmet
meal. You want a beautiful, satisfy-
ing, intriguing menu." El
