Kaplan started in theater as another
young man in a much lighter relation-
ship with an older woman. He ran on
stage and hugged a lady who was cast
as the grandmother of his 5-year-old
character.
"I started acting for fun, and I'm still
doing that," says Kaplan, a recent
Stanford graduate with an English-
drama major. "That first show was sup-
posed to be sad, but I had a smile on
my face because I had no idea what was
going on.''
After many community theater expe-
riences in northern California, Kaplan's
parents took him to New York for a
summer of auditions when he was 11.
He and his mother stayed on after the
young actor won a role in Rags for the
American Jewish Theatre.
Spotted by producers in the audi-
ence, Kaplan was asked to audition for
the early 1990s musical Falsettos and
got a part. He moved on to an Off-
Broadway play, films and television.
"I had my bar mitzvah at a Reform
temple in California, but I had many
bar mitzvahs while performing as Jason
in Falsettos," says Kaplan, a Tony nomi-
nee and a recipient of the Theatre
World Award for that role.
"I was cast in a [Broadway] produc-
tion of The Diary of Anne Frank oppo-
site Natalie Portman while still a high
school senior. I graduated from public
school in New York, took off a year
from school and went on to Stanford
without taking off any time during col-

lege."
Kaplan's film credits include Life with
Mikey and A Kid in the Arabian Nights.

Among his television assignments have
been Brotherly Love and Boy Meets
World
"I think television is more difficult
than theater,".he says. 'Although TV
shows provide opportunities to stop
and redo something, I think that makes
for the loss of expression in conveying a
theme."
Detroit audiences will hear music in
the play that is reminiscent of the film.
Besides the Simon and Garfunkel num-
bers, such as "Mrs. Robinson," there
will be new additions, all part of an
album available through Sony Music
Entertainment.
Kaplan, who is single and the oldest
of three siblings, especially appreciates
the music as he works on developing
his own singing abilities apart from this
theater piece. After completing the tour
with an Ottawa stop in June, Kaplan
plans on vacationing and then return-
ing to commitments with his vocal
coach. "I'm going to England and
Ireland," reveals the actor, who also
supports volunteerism and has given
time to a veterans hospital and chil-
dren's activities. "I like opera, which I'm
studying in New York, because it's both
admirable and regimented." I I
