onathan C. Kaplan has made
two important appearances
in Detroit — one public and
another private.
The public appearance continues
through June 13 at the Fisher
Theatre, where he takes on the title
role in The Graduate. The private
appearance happened 23 years ago,
when he was born in a local hospital.
"Both my parents worked for very
large corporations, so we were mov-
ing around all the time," Kaplan
explains. "We were only in Detroit
about six months- after I was born,
although we returned later for anoth-
er short stay.
"Living in a lot of different places
helped prepare me for touring with
stage companies. The repeated expe-
riences definitely taught me how to
pack.
"A more significant benefit has
been learning how to identify with
new communities immediately.. I
have friends who seldom leave their
hometowns and have much harder
times adapting to new environ-
ments."
People who remember The
Graduate storyline from the book or
the 1967 film will be adapting to
some new twists in the play.
Although keeping to the seduction of
a younger man by an older woman,
this time with brief nudity, the cur-
rent production pays more attention
to the man's relationship with some-
one closer to his age — the older
woman's daughter.
Kaplan, as Benjamin Braddock,
takes on a role altered from the one
made famous by Dustin Hoffman in
the movie. Kelly McGillis, as Mrs.
Robinson, takes a part similar to that Jonathan Kaplan as Benjamin Braddock and Kelly McGillis as Mrs. Robinson in
