Hillel students uncover "dinosaur bones" and learn
a lot about history.

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

AppleTree Editor

N

ews Flash ... Second-grade
students at Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan
Detroit have made an
astonishing discovery! Dinosaur bones
have just been found near the school's
baseball field!
No one_cansay exactly how long the
bones have been there; only Hillel
officials know for certain. What is
known at this point: According to the
Michigan Curriculum framework, all
Michigan students should study fossils
in second grade. Most do so by look-
ing at pictures. Hillel officials wanted
a little something more hands-on for
their students.
Elementary Principal Robyn
Glickman explained, "This is active
learning at its best.

- "This program required a lot of
teamwork. The Parent-Teachers
Organization gave financial support.
Many of the second-grade parents
helped with the set up ... The teachers
really gave this program 110 percent
of their efforts and energy. It was well
worth itto see the students' curiosity
and excitement."
Working in pairs, the students
uncovered replica fossils, then learned
how to prepare them for assembly.
John Ribbing of the Dinosaur
Recovery Bureau taught students how
to identify the fossils, which were
assembled onto a custom frame of a
Maiasaura. Ribbing also led the stu-
dents in a discussion about dinosaurs
and helped them figure out what
eventually led to this poor dino's
demise; the students concluded it died
as a result of a T-Rex attack, no bones
about it. ❑
