The first night, the kids were talking and going crazy all night, so I consid- ered the three hours of sleep I received a blessing. After breakfast, we went to our cabin activity, the climbing wall. This was what the kids were looking forward to, and you could see how much it meant to them as they each took their turns climbing the wall. The afternoon was filled with bad weather, and I was extremely surprised to see the spirits of everyone still soaring high. The night activity was a trip to the Pioneer Village. I was in disbelief that the kids running around did not break anything and no one was hurt. My role was that of the Indian chief who, after the kids did a task for me, would give them their water rights. Being the Indian, I was the subject of numerous jokes. These kids, from southwest Detroit, were no different from kids anywhere in Michigan. Overall, I thought the weekend was a huge success. Besides giving the kids a break from their daily lives, it gave me an opportunity to see into the lives of kids that, under normal circumstances, I would not have the chance to interact and spend time with. I highly recom- mend this trip to anyone wishing to have a great time with kids who live an extremely difficult life. n 834900 SI-10P SWERtit/OOD FOR.
