Born in Montreal, she lived in Herkimer, N.Y., before heading to the University of Michigan to study journalism, "but I got a 'Mrs.' degree instead," she quipped. "I learned tzedakah from my parents and got involved right away in the local Jewish community." Newman has come full circle in journalism, now as the editor of the Newman News, a 40-page magazine filled with family news that is distrib- uted twice a year to 80 households around the world. A 55-year member of Hadassah, she is a past president, national board member, programming chairperson, organizer of the thrift shop, president of Hadassah House Inc., and editor of the newsletter, "Hadassah Headlines." Known for her excellent singing voice — she sang with a band as a teenager and performs in local amateur productions — Newman would often "sing" her speeches at Hadassah meetings. The Newmans started a project titled "Hear, Oh Israel" 20 years ago, collecting and reconditioning hearing aids and sending them to Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem. "We're dis- tributed about 7,000, and it's very heartwarming to receive letters from both contributors and recipients," she said. The Newmans, who have visited Israel 35 times, also have established an endowment fund in her name for pediatric hearing research at Hadassah Hospital. Specializing in programming, Newman has been active with the Sinai Guild, Women's American ORT, Israel Bonds, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish Home & Aging Services, Congregation Shaarey Zedek (as a 62-year member), the American Technion Society and Brandeis University.
