Alzheimer's Luncheon

A

special benefit for the
Alzheimer's Association
Greater Michigan Chapter
featured an exclusive lunch-
eon with handbag designer Judith
Leiber at Saks Fifth Avenue last
month. More than 200 patrons
attended the Troy event with this
accessory doyenne.
Lil Erdeljan, Doreen Hermelin,
Rita Wasserman and Jinny Runkle
were the event co-chairs.
"Judith Leiber is synonymous in
our industry as an icon of what is
beautiful," said Saks fashion director.
Cheryl Hall Lindsay.
Leiber mesmerized the crowd with
her fascinating background. She was
born in Hungary into a middle-class
Jewish family. When it came time to
go to university, she went to England.
She came home for the summer of
1939 and was unable to return due to
World War II. The Leiber family was
able hide in a friend's home.
"We were 26 people in one room,"
she recalled.
When the Russians liberated the
area in 1944, the family returned to
their apartment and lived in the cellar.
In 1947, the newly married Leiber

arrived in the United States with her
husband and began to work in the
fashion industry.
In 1962, she started her own busi-
ness with $5,000 and three employees
in a loft. She was disappointed when
one of her first leather handbags was
delivered with spots. "There were so
many spots I put rhinestones on
them to cover it up," she said. Thus
began the Leiber signature mark —
beautiful handbags adorned with
crystals and jewels.
Many patrons arrived at the lulich-
eon carrying a Judith Leiber bag.
Shelly Cooper purchased her hand-
bag 35 years ago at Saks on the
Boulevard. Leslie Slatkin displayed a
vintage bag as well.
Some of the Alzheimer's supporters
