Next year, however, the squad will be a full-fledged member of the Catholic League. Among the key play- ers who helped the Jaguars begin the season 5-1 are junior first baseman and ace pitcher Sam Yashinsky, who bats cleanup, and junior centerfielder Bradley Garden, the leadoff hitter. Other juniors include outfielder Jacob Kahn, shortstop/pitcher Josh Cohen, catcher/outfielder Andrew Garon, first baseman/pitcher Alex Tapper and second baseman Josh Blechman. Sophomores include outfielder/DH Brad Pierce, catcher/DH Michael Goss, outfielder Levi Stewart and utility man Eric Awerbach. The Jaguars also carry five fresh- men: catcher Matt Kurzmann, infielder/DH Noah Curhan, third baseman Brad Garon, outfielder Daniel Kohn and infielder Aric Klar. Larry Garon is the head coach. Gary Yashinsky and Tim Cohen are his assistants. The team will compete in the Class D state tournament later this season. Senior Adam Dechow is the start- ing centerfielder at Walled Lake Central. Sophomore Lowell Schwalb is the starting catcher for Central's JV squad. This season marks Stew Bronstein's 20th anniversary as West Bloomfield's softball coach. His Jewish players include three senior starters: first base- man/outfielder Michelle Neff, second baseman/outfielder Aimee Roby and centerfielder Erica Lewis. Juniors include pitching ace Jessica Topor, outfielder Stephanie Marcus and pitcher Maddy Zingle. Sophomore Michelle Lankowsky starts at short- - stop and freshman utility infielder Sarah Elkus has started at several positions. West Bloomfield graduate Alissa Kerner is a freshman first baseman on MIT's softball team. She began the season 0-for-2 in four games. West Bloomfield's tennis team is off to a good start and figures to get even better as junior David Murav recovers from a broken left wrist. The right- hander played No. 1 singles last year but he began this season playing with a cast, which forced him to hit one- handed backhands instead of his usual two-hander. Nevertheless he's in the lineup at No. 2 singles. Senior Mike Feldman plays No. 3 singles and sophomore Mike Boren No. 4. Senior Seth Gold plays No. 2 doubles. Junior Matt Plein and soph- omore Aaron Seidman have both played at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while junior David Metter and sopho- more Rob Jurewicz have both played at No. 4 doubles. Bloomfield Hills Andover's tennis team includes six Jewish players, led by junior Howie Migdal at No. 1 sin- gles, plus sophomore Isaac Kalo at No. 2 and senior Matt Ran at No. 4. Doubles players include senior Alex Kahn and junior Jeff Taxe at No. 3 and sophomore Shaun Silver, who's played at No. 4 and No. 5. The Barons' early-season highlight was a victory at the eight-team Port Huron Invitational. Steve Weingarden is in his fifth year as Berkley High's tennis coach. His team includes junior Michael Coden at No. 3 singles, sophomore Andrew White at No. 4 singles, sophomore Matt Weitzman at No. 2 doubles and junior Bobby Siporin at No. 3 dou- bles. Birmingham Groves' tennis team includes junior Jake Seidman at No. 4 singles, plus four sophomore doubles players: Brad Krasnik at No. 1, Jackson Klein at No. 3, Andy Semanson at No. 3 and No. 4, and Aaron Sklar at No. 4. Wayne State University senior Kim Spaulding earned the Detroit-based school's President's Award for academ- ic success. Spaulding played four years of hockey at WSU. ❑ .
