Coles is a busi- nessman, corn- munity leader, philanthropist, Jewish activist and fund-raiser. He experienced a near-fatal motor- Michael Coles cycle accident - that left him disabled. She start- ed her career as a research assistant for the Lou Gordon radio program in 1961. After serving as assistant project director for a Wayne State University criminal justice study of juvenile offenders, she developed a master plan for education and employment for the city of Detroit. In 1972, she served as director of the Detroit Cable Television Advisory Committee, overseeing development of a cable television system for Detroit. From 1972 to 1980, she was producer and on-air moderator for WTVS-TV's Public Affairs, an interview program. As vice president for Warner Amex Cable Television, she was involved in television franchising activities in New York, Tucson and Hours: Mon-Sat 11-2 Closed Sundays Judge Avern and Lois Cohn will receive the Eternal Light Award for "lifelong commitment to advancing social justice" at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America dinner Monday, May 10, at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, Judge Cohn is the longest-serving judge in the U.S. District Court-Eastern District of Michigan. Judge Cohn served on the Michigan Social Welfare Commission, 1963; Michigan Civil Rights Commission, 1972-1975; and the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, 1975-1979. He is a past president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and a past vice president of the American Jewish Committee. Irwin and Avern Cohn were the first father-son recipients of Federation's Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service. A life-long member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Judge Cohn continues his late parents' support for the Southfield-based Yeshiva Beth Yehudah. Judge Cohn has three children and seven grand- children. Lois and Judge Avern Cohn Boston. She was president of Cable Communications Consultants from 1983 to 1985. Currently, Mrs. Cohn is the director/owner of ARTSPACE, Inc. a resale gallery for fine art in Birmingham.
