A Sampling of Our New Menu Items...

As Rock's second largest stockholder,
he made millions when Rock, which
had gone public at $10 a share, was
sold in 1999 to Intuit Inc. of
California, a software manufacturer,
for $532 million in Intuit stock. Rock
shareholders were paid off at $33 per
share. Gilbert also is one of about 15
investors, besides his brother, who
bought Rock and Quicken Loan back
from Intuit in 2002.
"Suffice it to say I have enough
money so that I never have to worry
about anything financially again,"
Gilbert offered. "But what do you do
when you're comfortable with a lot of
money? You can't just sit around.
"I always loved the movies — and
the city of New York. So, I combined
the two of them into my new movie
career. I did my homework and met a
lot of studio executives, distributors
and agents. On purpose, I didn't write
a check for 19 months because I didn't
want to rush into anything until I
knew what I was doing."
Gilbert formed Camelot Pictures, a
throwback to the name of his brother's
Camelot Ventures investment firm,

and now has offices in Manhattan's
Tribeca Office Center and in Los
Angeles. He said one of his most
important steps was securing a partner,
Jewish filmmaker Dan Halsted of Los
Angeles, who is a 20-year veteran pro-
ducer and knows his way around
Hollywood. Gilbert spends about 10
days a month on the West Coast.
"What Gary accomplished with
Garden State can be compared to an
athlete winning an Olympic gold
medal on his first try," said Halsted.
"Producing movies is a slow, painstak-
ing process," Gilbert pointed out. "It
takes a long time to do the scripting, the
casting and work out the financial
details with other producers, most of
whom are now sharing production costs
because of the high expense of movie-
making. Some movie credits now list
10 - 12 producers, co-producers and exec-
utive producers. It all requires many
meetings and phone calls, but it's excit-
ing and a lot of fun.
"You can save about 25-30 percent
by filming in Canada," he added, "but

Prozac or punch lines? Michael J. Fox recently traded lines as a guest star with
Zach Braff in the comedy "Scrubs.'

sweet, goofy playfulness that makes
other sitcoms look calcified by
comparison.
Under the bemused, stylish eye
of creator Bill Lawrence (Spin
City), Scrubs bounces from elabo-
rate fantasy sequences to snappy
one-liners to obscure pop-culture
references with breezy, good-
natured grace. And when it decides

to get heavy, it delivers its life les-
sons with a light touch.
So go ahead and dump the bur-
den of your laughter on the ladies
and gentlemen of Scrubs, who will
never let their responsibilities get
in the way of a disco interlude or a
first-rate pirate fantasy.
With lunatics like this, who needs
