The quotations listed below offer some thoughts for the celebration of Mother's Day: Mama Said "Quotable" draws inspiration from 317 Jewish women. SUZANNE CHESSLER Special to the Jewish News E laine Bernstein Partnow has had a mission since the 1970s — calling attention to statements made by notable women, from biblical to modern times. Her fifth edition of The Quotable Woman, published in 2001, became a tome that had grown with each publication. This year, Partnow is coming out with a new book of statements that she found elicited her per- sonal emotions. The Quotable Jewish Woman: Wisdom, Inspiration 6- Humor from the Mind and Heart (Jewish Lights Publishing: $24.95) turned out to be a fun way to explore her own roots. Partnow found statements that resonated.with her through books, magazines and the Web. 5/ 7 2004 42 "I want to raise the visibility of women and used my own sensibilities to do that," says Partnow, 60, who also does pre- sentations about a handful of those she has referenced. "The latest book has 2,400 quota- tions from 317 women." Partnow has divided state- ments according to many sub- jects, such as "Beauty & Appearance," "Community & Citizenship" and "Money, Business & Economics." At the end of the book, she has short biographies on the people quoted — writers, entertainers, "The only thing I know for sure is that I would rather have a child than a book." — Anne Roiphe, "Fruitful, " 1996 "My mother said I drove her crazy. I did not drive my mother crazy. I flew her there. It was faster." — Robin Tyler, standup routine "The Quotable Jewish Woman" offers reflections on Jewish motherhood. "Only a mother remem- bers her children's land- marks as her own."
