Preservation of the Jewish state

requires all Jews' involvement.

ROBERT A. SKLAR

Editor

Megiddo, Israel
he gathering of more than
560 Jews from Detroit, Ann
and Toledo at the Ramat
David Air Force Base in Israel
to mark Yom HaZikaron and Yom

HaAtzmaut."is something bigger than
the moment," the base commander said
on April 26.
"It is something that connects every
one of us to one big thing, and this is
that the Jewish people of the globe are
responsible for the
Jewish state," said the
commander. The
Israel Defense Forces
does not allow names
of active soldiers to
be published.
The commander
was addressing
Aviva Gordon
Federation's
Michigan Miracle
Mission 4. He sees visitors to the base as
emissaries of Zionism. "Whenever a Jew
comes to Israel," he said, "I'm willing to
have them here and tell them the story of
our fight for building a Jewish state here
on this land."
Israel has not lost a war in 56 years,
but faces a crisis 43 months into the
Palestinian intifada. More than 21,700
soldiers and terror victims have died
defending or building Israel since 1947.
Reflecting on the Israelites being driv-
en away by destruction of the First and
Second Temples, the commander said: "I
don't think if we loSe this time, the world
will give us another chance. I believe that
if we lose this time, the Jewish people
will spread all over the world, and we
won't get another chance building a
Jewish state here."
"Our visit does not end here, but con-
tinues as we return home and bring the
message of support to our own commu-
nities," said CEO Robert Aronson of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Aronson announced Detroit support
among mission-goers for a planned sol-
diers' memorial on the base.
"We are continuously tormented as a
people, yet we always triumph with
God's help," said mission-goer Aviva
Gordon of Oak Park. "I plan to contin-
ue to do my part to ensure our conti-
nuity." ❑
