Sacred Vows

A Franklin couple find
a holy site for holy words.

Jerusalem

T

here is something special about
celebrating Shabbat in
Jerusalem. People in the
streets, whether Orthodox or
secular, greet you with "Shabbat shalom."
Lines of people slowly wind their way
into the Old City, children holding their
father's hands, men in squarish hats or
rounded ones — depending on their sect
of Judasim — young people warmly con-
versing with friends. Families and
tourists go through the check point and
gather in the square by the Western Wall
in the Jewish quarter, as others, men on
one side, women on the other, pray at
the Wall.

During Federation's Michigan Miracle
Mission 4 on April 23, 20 Detroiters
gather in a corner of the square around
Jennifer and Paul Silverman of Franklin.
Married for 10 years, the Silvermans will
renew their vows.
Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Congregation
Sharrey Zedek Southfield places his hand
on their heads, as friends — Eleanor and
Lawrence Jackier, Roger Leemis and
Marta Rosenthal — raise a chuppah over
the Silvermans.
"This is a time of sacred joy and grati-
fication. Enjoy the happiness of the
woman you love ..." the rabbi reads. And
by the end of the prayer, the couple are
greeted with smiles and tears. Candy is
thrown, and the group breaks into song
and dance. ❑

Rabbi Joseph Krakoff renews the vows of Paul and Jennifer Silverman
at the Western Wall.
