The Chapel that recognizes )1 each family's individual needs. government during the war. She came to Detroit to be near her sister Francis, and was like a second mother to niece Sandy and nephew Bruce. But then she met Dave Perlman. Their 44-year-marriage almost didn't happen. He was quiet and made the mistake of reading a newspaper while they were having dessert on their first date. She was furious about not being the focus of his attention, and it was probably the last time she wasn't. The young couple adopted Harold and Debbie and had many trials with Debbie's illness. Her death as an adult was a blow, but life went on. Hal and Cindy and their children Matt and Jeff were the focus of Rossie's later life. Their trips, Hal's teaching at Brighton High, how the grandsons were doing in school, sports and jobs were the happy topics of conversation. Their visits to Rossie and outings to restaurants were major events. "She always wanted to go to Ram's Horn," said Cindy. "'You can get anything at Ram's Horn,' she'd say. "And at the restaurant — even though she came from an Orthodox home — she'd always say, and it got to the point that we would repeat it with her: 'I want bacon fried crisp and blot- ted, or I'll send it back!"' The family grew up in Oak Park, but love — the ability and the love to make friends." Especially important to Mrs. Friedman was her family. "Bubbie believed in all of us," said Shana. "To her, her family was a treasure chest filled with the most priceless jewels; each in 'equal standing, beautiful, special and loved in a way that only she knew how." At the funeral, Linda translated one of her mother's favorite Yiddish lullabies: Pretty as the moon, Bright as the stars, From Heaven you have sent me a beaulifitl gift "That's how I felt about my mother," Linda said. "She was just a beautiful wonderful gift to her family and to the world." Edith Friedman is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin and Madelyne Friedman of Southfield, Aharon and Leba Friedman of later moved to a home and then an apartment in Southfield. She was a past president of the former B'nai B'rith Women's Bowling League and a mem- ber of Congregation B'nai Moshe. After Dave's death, Rossie moved to the Trowbridge in Southfield; but a fall and the retirement of a longtime com- panion forced her to move to Evergreen. Her stroke "slowed her years ago," said Hal, "but not her mind." I can vouch for that. When I con- cluded our Sunday visits, she always thanked me for coming. In response, I always thanked her for inviting me. And I meant it every time. Rossie Perlman died April 29, 2004, at age 84.
