Senior Scott Moscow and junior Brad Levick are both second-year starters and both are starting pitchers. Levick also starts at third base while Morrison plays second base. Junior Kevin Sack, a first-year varsity player, will see plenty of action at first and third base and as a relief pitcher. Sophomore Sean Seid will be one of Birmingham Groves' top two starting pitchers, as well as one of the Falcons' best hitters this season. He moves from starting second baseman last year to num- ber one shortstop this sea- son. Junior outfielders Abe Neistein and Nate Teitel will also see varsity action. Sixth-year Andover coach Dan Smith should field a strong team, includ- ing three Jewish players. Wedes Junior Michael Fenkell starts in the outfield while versatile sophomore Casey Smith starts at either second base, shortstop or third base. Freshman second baseman Matt Fenster also earned a varsity spot. West Bloomfield's quintet of Jewish baseball players is led by junior starting shortstop Brett Borock. Fellow junior Matt Friedman is a starting outfielder, junior Matt Kash is the starting first baseman, senior Matt Lefkowitz plays second base and junior Matt Drazin will see action in the outfield. Senior Eric White figures to be Berkley's ace starting pitcher this sea- son. Senior left fielder Mike Engler and sophomore shortstop Eli Weiner are also starters. Cranbrook's baseball team includes four Jewish players, led by starting senior left fielder Eli Melaas. Junior Cory Charlupski starts some games as catcher. Senior Jeff Mann plays second base and senior Andrew Aronow sees action as a first baseman and relief pitcher. Berkley senior Justin Wedes was a finalist for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award this year. To be eligible, a stu- dent-athlete must earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and be involved in school or community activi- ties, as well as earn a varsity letter in the sport in which he or she is nominated. Wedes is Berkley's co-valedictorian, he participated in student government, the National Honor Society, Peer Mentors and Key Club. He also works with the Huntington Woods Teen Council to create drug-free community programming. Wedes was a Scholar-Athlete finalist in track and field, where the fourth-year letterman runs one- and two-mile races plus the 4x800 relay. He also earned fOur cross country letters and two swimming letters. Wedes swam the 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and the 200 individual . medley. He hopes to join either the track or rowing team at the University of Michigan this fall. Wedes was also select- ed to the Oakland Activities Association All-Academic team in cross country and was recognized as a High School Scholar Athlete of the Week on WXYZ-TV. Wedes, sister, Erica, also earned OAA All-Academic honors for cross country. Cranbrook's Gabe Schubiner earned second team All-Area honors in the 100 backstroke. Roman Sandler, who helped Groves win a state swim championship, was second team All-Area as part of the Falcons' 200 medley relay squad and received third team honors in the 100 breaststroke.
