human heart in all its glory and darkness. "All the big questions are there. If you're interested in human behavior, and if you're interested in history, it's an endlessly fascinating and perplex- ing event." A Final Note Hands Suitcase is a story filled with the unexpected, an almost unbeliev- able maze of twists and turns. The truth about the suitcase itself is no different. Fumiko Ishikoka, curator of the children's Holocaust Education Center in Tokyo, received the suit- case in March 2000. She, like every- one who saw it, believed the suitcase had actually belonged to Hana. Then the daughter of George Brady, liana's brother, was looking at an early photograph of the suitcase and the case Fumiko had received from the museum at Auschwitz. (Fumiko had traveled to Poland earlier, where she met with the muse- urn director. She wanted a few items to place in her museum, physical objects people could see and touch to help them better understand the way individual lives had been destroyed. (After a brief meeting, the Auschwitz museum director sent Fumiko the suitcase, along with a case of Zyklon B gas, a child's sock, - shoe and sweater.) George's . daughter noticed a differ- ence in the handle. A slight differ- ence, but a noticeable difference. The truth has since come out: The suitcase Fumiko received was a repli- ca; the original case had been destroyed in a fire in 1984. The suit- case Fumiko received was, nonethe- less, almost exactly like the one Hana had owned. "This came as a complete surprise to all of us," Karen Levine says, "though nothing would have been any different" had they known it was a copy. ❑ .
