News Digest: Boycott Hoops In Israel? Jerusalem/JTA — Some Italian fans are calling for a boycott of this week's European basketball championship in Israel because of security fears. A note on the Web site of a Skipper Bologna team fan club called for fans to stay away from the Euroleague Final Four, which started April 29. "How many would be willing to leave their hotels and venture into the city using public buses?" the Web site asked. Monte Paschi Siena and Skipper Bologna will play in one semifinal, with CSKA Moscow and Maccabi Tel Aviv playing in the other. Holocaust Treasure Found Warsaw/JTA — The son of a Holocaust survivor recovered a cache of gold coins his family had buried in Poland during the Holocaust. Working with a Polish investigator, Mark Biederman, 43, helped recover the cache of 63 gold coins, dating as far back as 1703, that the family had buried in a ceramic pot beside the fam- ily home in Lodz. Biederman, from southern Ontario, was planning to fly to Poland this week to take possession of the coins. Jewish Graves Toppled Paris/JTA — Several children are sus- pected of knocking over tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France. Police questioned the group of chil- dren, aged 8 to 16, after six stones were found lying on the ground at the cemetery in Horbourg-Wihr over the weekend. EU Wants Libya Berlin, held ahead of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe conference on anti-Semitism, brought together leading German politicians' and heads of Jewish com- munities from around Europe. Paris/JTA — The European Union wants Libya to join a future free-trade partnership of European and Mediterranean countries that includes Israel. European Commission President Romano Prodi said he wants Libya "as soon as possible" to join the Barcelona process, which links European, North African and Middle Eastern countries in an association aimed at creating a free-trade zone by 2014. Libya is the only country in the region to have its membership with- held because of its refusal to share a table with Israeli representatives. Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi was visiting Belgium, staying in a Bedouin tent in a chateau near Brussels accompanied by blue-clad, all-female bodyguards. It was the Libyan leader's first trip outside Africa or the Middle East in 15 years. London/JTA — A leading Orthodox rabbinic judge is in London's High Court, accused of slandering a Jewish millionaire. The judge claimed London busi- nessman Brian Maccaba preyed on young married women in the Orthodox community. Maccaba is suing Rabbi Ya'akov Lichtenstein of the Orthodox Federation of Synagogues for slander, harassment and breach of confidence. Maccaba, a convert from Cathol- icism, claims Lichtenstein told fellow rabbis and other high-profile Sephardi community members that the entre- preneur was a serial adulterer and had sexually harassed a young married woman in the community. Hillary: Anti-Anti-Semitism Former UJC Official Dies Washington/JTA — Hillary Clinton pledged to introduce a Senate resolu- tion condemning anti-Semitism. In a letter to the World Jewish Congress that was read in Berlin, the Democratic senator from New York said she planned to introduce "a bipar- tisan resolution condemning anti- Semitism and those who would perpet- uate it." Clinton also pledged to help the WJC's campaign to have the United Nations General Assembly pass a stand-alone resolution condemning anti-Semitism. The World Jewish Congress event in New York/JTA — Arthur Naparstek, former head of a department at the United Jewish Communities, died at 65. Naparstek died April 24 of compli- cations from lung cancer. Naparstek headed the UJC's Israel and Overseas Pillar from 2001 to 2002. An expert in urban redevelop- ment, Naparstek for a time was dean of the School of Applied Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
