Shaarey Zedek's New Rabbi

In a letter to mem-
bers of
Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, the
synagogue's newly
hired, soon-to-be
ordained rabbi,
Eric Yanoff, shares
some of his back-
ground and why he
chose to take the
Eric Yanoff
position, which
begins June 15.
The letter — to be published in the
synagogue's newsletter — includes
Yanoff's background leading up to his
ordination from the Rabbinical School
of the Jewish Theological Seminary in
New York next month.
Born into a large Conservative fami-
ly, he was raised in Philadelphia. "I went
to Princeton University, convinced that
I'd become a doctor," he wrote. "But -
instead of laboratory work, I chose an
opportunity to jumpstart a junior con-
gregation. Instead of shadowing physi-
cians, I spent. summers on staff at Camp
Ramah in the Poconos. And instead of a
major in molecular biology I focused on
comparative literature and Jewish stud-
ies."
In college he wrote that he also
developed his non-Judaic loves of musi-
cal theater and comedy — as a compos-
er, producer, and performer — and
piano. In fact, a national tour of one
show once brought him to Detroit.
As a rabbinical and education stu-
dent at JTS, he taught drama, Bible,
Talmud, philosophy and t011ah (prayer)
at the Solomon Schechter High School
of New York. "I have grown through
professional opportunities as an intern
at Temple Israel Center in White Plains,
as a hospital chaplain at Westchester
Medical Center and as a rabbi for the
"One More Minyan" at Park Avenue
Synagogue in Manhattan," he said.
Last September, he married Dava, a
family life programmer at the Jewish
Community Center in Manhattan and
children's dance teacher whom he met
while working at Camp Ramah.
"Once I realized the steps that I had
already taken, the path ahead of me
became very clear," he wrote. "It is with
great joy and excitement that Dava and
I look forward to our path bringing us
to the warm, enthusiastic Shaarey
Zedek community."
Richard Rosenberg, Shaarey Zedek
executive director described Yanoff as "a
very spirited, musically-inclined person
who loves congregational life."
